For me, it was losing my mom and having life change overnight. For Lisa, it was stepping into responsibility early—working at 14, helping take care of things at home, even making sure her dad was fed while her mom was working. She wasn’t just a kid… she was already carrying adult weight. And somewhere along the way, you learn to push things down. To keep going. To not make a mess of your feelings… even when they need somewhere to go. Natalie’s father died from cancer in 1974. Her sister Betsy passed away from ovarian cancer in 1999. Another sister, Bernice, was diagnosed with endometrial cancer in 2008. Natalie herself was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2005/2006. In this conversation, Natalie opens up about what it means to carry a genetic cancer syndrome, the fear and strength that comes with it, and how a family can face unimaginable loss while still choosing courage, awareness, and hope.
