4 Practices of Problem Solvers // Vernon Gordon // Hidden Figures
In this message, "4 Practices of Problem Solvers," we explore what it looks like to respond to life's challenges with the wisdom, faith, and courage that God provides. Rooted in Judges 4:1–14, 23–24, we meet Deborah, a wife, prophet, judge, and military leader who served as a mother to Israel for forty years, and we discover that the greatest threat to our beliefs is not the people we face but the boxes we build. Those boxes are dangerous because they limit us to a previous season's obedience, and when our vision is no longer bigger than our boundaries, we begin saying no to God. Through Deborah's example, we learn four practices that every problem solver needs: God's presence, a plan, people, and patience. Problems require us to invite God in first, because hearing from God and hearing something that merely sounds spiritual are not the same thing, and it is dangerous to seek a way out of seasons we never invited Him into. When God does respond, He doesn't just give promises, He gives plans, and those plans require us to move from "this" to "there." We are also reminded that we were not created to collect glory, and that we must first be delivered from pride before we can be delivered from bondage. And finally, we are called to stay steady, because Judges 4:24 reminds us that victory came "stronger and stronger, until," and everything changes when a mothering figure has the patience to remain.
