Hosted by Jayson and Rebecca (Emily Sin), The Sanctuary of Sin is a sex-positive, kink-focused, and unapologetically queer podcast exploring the worlds of BDSM, sex work, feminism, witchcraft, and all things delectably sinful. With over a decade of experience as switches, we bring firsthand knowledge, honest reviews, and engaging discussions to the table— unpacking the roots of so-called “sins,” confronting the shame that surrounds them, and celebrating the ways our communities reclaim power through pleasure. From the psychology of dominance to the history of moral panics, we’re here to question it all.Alongside these deep dives, we’ll keep you in the loop with reviews of the UK’s wildest events, shoutouts to the creatives and kinksters making waves, and the latest juicy news from the queer, kink, and sex positive scenes. This podcast is a place for education, discussion, and community—where ‘sin’ isn’t shameful, but something to be embraced, explored, and understood. E13: Rule 34 of the Internet

If it exists, there’s porn of it—and in this episode, we put that rule to the test. Rebecca quizzes Jayson on the wonderfully weird world of paraphilias, from anthropomorphised wet floor signs to James Joyce’s fart-fuelled love letters that prove kinks are nothing new. We dive into viral shock classics like 2 Girls 1 Cup and 1 Man 1 Jar—the internet’s strange initiation rites of the 2000s—before wrapping things up with a cheeky game matching old euphemisms to their modern-day sexual equivalents. Ever wondered what “groping for trout in a peculiar river” really means? E12: The Power of Women - Historical Memes and the Battle for the Trousers

From Aristotle getting ridden like a horse to Virgil stuck in a basket, medieval and Renaissance Europe was obsessed with stories of powerful women turning the tables on men. In this episode, we dive into the “Power of Women” topos – the original historical memes. We trace how these tales evolved into the Battle of the Trousers – where domestic disputes over “who wears the trousers” became satire, cautionary tales, and declarations of devotion. We unpack how these stories were used by people from all walks of life to enforce moral behaviour, challenge gender norms, or poke fun at them. Were they warnings about the dangers of loving women too well, or lessons about what happens when men fail to respect them enough? Join us as we explore how humor, caution, and devotion were woven together in these fascinating cultural snapshots of love, power, and control. E11: Wrath - The Demonisation of Women’s Rage & Sexuality Part 3

In the final part of our deep dive into Wrath: The Demonisation of Women’s Rage & Sexuality, we explore the twisted modern history of hysteria, uterine fury, and so-called nymphomania. This week, we trace how women’s pain, desire, and defiance were pathologised—from Church-led exorcisms to "pelvic massages" at the hands of midwives and early physicians. We unpack the invention of the vibrator as a tool of medical control, Freud’s maddening theories on penis envy and repressed sexuality, and the bizarre phenomenon of World War II soldiers weaponising “hysterical” limbs to escape the frontlines. This episode uncovers how the legacy of hysteria continues to haunt modern medicine, sexuality, and the ways we understand feminine power. Episode E10: Wrath - The Demonisation of Women’s Rage & Sexuality Part 2 Cover

E10: Wrath - The Demonisation of Women’s Rage & Sexuality Part 2

This week, we dive deeper into the roots of Scotland’s brutal witch trials, beginning with the life and paranoia of King James VI. We explore how his personal fears and political ambitions led to the Witchcraft Act of 1563, setting the stage for centuries of persecution. We also examine the cruel invention of the Scold’s Bridle—also known as the branks—a tool of public shaming and forced silence used to control and humiliate outspoken women. These instruments of misogyny weren’t just symbolic—they were real weapons in the war against women's wrath and autonomy. 🖤 Be sure to check out our blog for references, further reading, and sources that inspired this episode. ✨ Join us next time as we continue our exploration of the history of hysteria, diving into the Victorian era and beyond. Episode E9: Wrath - The Demonisation of Women’s Rage & Sexuality Part 1 Cover

E9: Wrath - The Demonisation of Women’s Rage & Sexuality Part 1

In this powerful opening episode of our Wrath series, we begin unpacking the long, twisted history of how women’s anger, sexuality and emotional expression have been pathologised, feared, and demonised throughout the ages. We trace the roots of "hysteria" and "melancholy" from ancient Egyptian beliefs about the wandering womb, through Hippocrates' dubious sex-based prescriptions, to medieval Europe’s descent into superstition and sin. We trace how diagnoses like hysteria and melancholy were used to explain—and control—women’s bodies and behaviour. Along the way, we explore how very real medical conditions — like endometriosis — were misunderstood, misdiagnosed, and transformed from bodily afflictions to signs of madness, evil, and even witchcraft. We also touch on the early roots of the European witch hunts and how the seeds of fear, misogyny, and moral panic began to grow. This episode digs into the early myths that still echo in modern medicine and lays the foundation for Part 2, where we dive deeper into the witch trials, including the brutal history of the Scottish hunts and the infamous Scold’s Bridle. 🧠🔥 Check out our blog post for references and further reading — and stay tuned for Part 2.
