Build a strong foundation for your brand using my step-by-step guide!
EPISODE ONE: Building a strong foundation for your brand.
A common misconception about branding is that your brand is all about your logo, colors, and fonts. I’m here to tell you that the foundation of your brand goes so much deeper than that!
As described by marketing expert Seth Godin, a brand “...is a set of expectations, stories, memories, and relationships that dictate a customer’s decision to choose one product over another.”
Before you can create brand graphics and content, you must first establish your brand values, your mission, and your purpose. From there, you should have a very clear idea of who your target audience is, what their specific needs are, and how you can best serve them.
When I first started my business, I had so much to learn in terms of photography that I was offering sessions to anyone and everyone that I could give them away to for free.
My passion was in equine photography and working with equestrian business owners, but I ended up shooting two small weddings, family sessions, and couples sessions which are all completely different audiences.
I was trying too hard to appeal to everyone, that I essentially attracted no one because I wasn’t specifically speaking to a target audience who truly felt my business could help them.
NOW, without question, you can clearly understand who I serve and how I serve them when you land on my website or Instagram.
Once you focus your positioning and your target audience, you can start to develop some brand pillars or content pillars.
Content pillars should be 3-5 different topics that are unique to you and what do you do - they will give you the ability to create consistent content in a predictable way over and over.
If you think back to Seth Godin’s definition of a brand, this is a great way to start to build some of those expectations and stories around your brand for your audience.
I want you to start to make a list of topics you can turn into brand pillars. For example, some of my brand pillars are equine photography, marketing tips, and client work.
If you were to take a look at my IG right now, you are guaranteed to see all of these topics reflected in my posts within the first 9 grids that are visible.
