Edith L. Cavell (1865–1915) was a courageous British nurse who served during World War I, caring for soldiers from both the Allied and German sides. Her remarkable bravery led her to assist around 200 Allied soldiers in escaping from German-occupied Belgium, an act for which she was arrested, court-martialed, and ultimately sentenced to death for treason. Despite efforts to appeal her sentence, she was executed by a German firing squad just hours after the verdict was announced, sparking global sorrow and outrage. In her honor, numerous memorials sprang up worldwide, including a statue near Trafalgar Square in London. --Adapted from Wikipedia. NOTE After recording Chapter 7, the reader learned that the subjects family pronounced the surname as it rhymes with gravel, leading to the pronunciation of CAvel in subsequent chapters. The first edition of this book was published in 1916, with the final portion of Chapter 15 sourced from a later edition. (Wikipedia page on Edith Cavell)
