The Music Goes Round and Round

Presenters: Rita Ray and Max Reinhardt A delicious mixed bag of goodies ends the Our Music Our Freedom podast series. We’re Featuring some standout musical highlights from Wandsworth's year as London borough of Culture: a world of East Asian sounds from the Celadon Club at Wandsworth Arts Fringe Festival, some classic cuts from Wandsworth Music at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, working on a programme devised by students with disabilities. Additional tasty musical revelations from over the last 5 decade - savour the flavour of more of the borough's most iconic musical happenings including T Rex, Punk and Rave - courtesy of Geoff Simmons, legendary local activist and community historian. The Fayre Feld Full of Folk

Presenter: Max Reinhardt A story of Folk music in the borough over the last five decades, told by one of the UK’s most outstanding performers and songwriters, Lisa Knapp. Lisa was born and brought up in Balham and Tooting, where she learned to play and where her love of folk music evolved. Along the way, there’s a few words and a little music from the late and legendary Bert Jansch who lived in Putney in the ’70’s, song extracts from Anne Briggs, Shirley Collins, A.L. Lloyd, Martin Carthy and Imagined Village , to name but a few. Lisa’s husband, producer and musical partner, Gerry Diver also contributes some wise words to the story. Wellbeing in Wandsworth

Presenter : Rita Ray Rita visits a number of Creative Health and Wellbeing projects in the borough, a key focus of Wandsworth’s London Borough of Culture year. Sensory theatremaker, Arti Prahsar, talks about her work and the way music is part of her practice, with excerpts from her contribution to the Culture Box archive, a sensory resource for use at home, produced by the London Health and Arts research project. Interviews, music and poetry from staff and members of unique music and art centre, Sound Minds, who work with people with lived experience of mental health problems.  South Korean virtuoso musician Hyelim Kim tells us the origin story of the traditional Daegeum flute, her research highlighting its role as an instrument bringing healing and peace, followed by an excerpt of her playing. Hear from internationally celebrated young people’s theatre company, Oily Cart, Tooting based pioneers of Sensory Theatre, with contributions from Artistic Director Ellie Griffiths talking about their interactive sensory productions and how music is a totally essential element to enhance and communicate the experience for neurodivergent audiences. Featuring performances from neurodiverse creator/musicians Kyllah Dyer on cello  (The World Beneath Us 2024), Lucy Bowen on guitar (InsideWays (2025)) and by Maya Youssef on qanun & cast (The Bounce 2014). Choir Leader, Cecelia Wickham Anderson and members of the Community Gospel Choir at Saint Michael’s Wandsworth Common talk about the transformative experiences that the choir and the music have given them and the community and share a live performance. Cymande: The Greatest Band You’ve (probably) Never Heard Of

Presenter: Max Reinhardt Cymande are a British band from Balham, originally active in the early 1970s. With a membership deriving from several Caribbean nations, Cymande were noted for their unique eclectic mix of music they called "nyah-rock" (Funk, soul, reggae, rock, African , Guyanan, and Jazz). The two founder members lived in the same street in Balham, Byrne Road, discovered a mutual love of music and created a band that has adoring intergenerational fans. They formed in 1971 ,released three albums before disbanding in 1974, completing USA stadium tours with soul and funk stars like the reverend Al Green. After gaining newfound popularity when their music was sampled by premiere league rap artists, including the Fugees, De La Soul and MC Solaar, they reformed in the 2010’s and have toured worldwide ever since. Their most recent album Renascence was released in January 2025. The band’s remarkable story is told by founder members Steve Scipio and Patrick Patterson. Wandsworth’s Jazz Buzz

Presenter: Rita Ray Jazz stories and music from Wandsworth Music Academy including CEO, Dan White; Olly Blackman, Senior Jazz Orchestra Tutor; and players from the Senior Jazz Orchestra, Cicely (Saxophone), Aiden (Trumpet) and Tom (Guitar). Hear from acclaimed jazz pianist and Wandsworth resident, Julian Joseph, founder of Julian Joseph Jazz Academy, Wandsworth born and patron of World Hearbeat Music Academy; Nathan Dawkins, bass and clarinet player, student at World Heart Beat Music Academy from the age of 8, interviewed at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in Greenwich, where he is studying; and Soweto Kinch, Jazz sax and hip hop supremo, composer, bandleader and BBC Radio 3 presenter, who reflects on his upbringing in Wandsworth and his early music lessons at Allfarthing Primary school.
